FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & IMPORTANT POLICIES

What's the camp focus and why is it unique?

MamLuft&Co. Dance’s Summer Dance Camp for Kids in Cincinnati is about the creative, empowering, expressive, and active practice of dance!

The camp is unique because, according to our research, it is the only camp in Cincinnati that offers Modern Dance and provides options for activities for the entire work day. It is not a 2 or 3-hour camp: activities run from 9am-3pm, with drop-off starting at 8:30am, and aftercare add-ons available up til 6pm!

We also DE-emphasize pink and princesses so that boys feel welcome and absolutely comfortable.

What ages are allowed?

Ages 5-10.

Children must have already had at least one year of school.

What is Modern Dance, and why is it good for children?

Historically, Modern Dance developed in the early 1900s and became a recognizable form by the 1950s, when it got its name from the Modern Era. It is different from Ballet because of its use of inversions, “free-er” use of the body (less restrictions), and a strong relationship with the ground. It has strong influences from many different forms of ethnic dance, as well.

Modern Dance is excellent for children because it encourages them to think outside the box, to be creative, to be expressive, to be physically aware, and to move freely.

What is the refund policy?

REFUNDS CANNOT BE ISSUED AFTER JUNE 19 FOR ANY REASON.

$50 PER CHILD of your tuition payment is a non-refundable deposit and cannot be returned for any reason, whether it be illness, injury, change of plans, or other reasons.

The remaining funds must be requested in writing to dance@mamluftcodance.org no later than 5:00pm on June 19.

How do the payment deadlines work?

FIRST, see the refund policy above!

Payment is due in full at the time of registration. If you need to make arrangements for a payment plan, please do not hesitate to contact us. You must be able to use a credit card via PayPal to set-up a payment plan.

You must pay in full by the registration deadlines to receive the appropriate discount.

LATE REGISTRATIONS may not receive a t-shirt, so avoid the late upcharge and please register on time!

What will the kids do?

Modern dance technique class & related activities
Children will move fully and creatively to music while developing skills in balance, strength, flexibility, and musicality. Related activities will include reinforcement of technical concepts in non-movement exercises (such as vocabulary games/quizzes). The children will learn and prepare a short modern dance for Friday’s performance.

Ballet dance class & activities
Children will be taught the older tradition of classical ballet, a foundation for modern dance, developing skills in ballet vocabulary, balance, strength, flexibility, and posture. Related activities will include reinforcement of technique in non-movement exercises, such as vocabulary quizzes. The children will learn and prepare a short ballet dance for Friday’s performance.

Other movement-related sessions

Water play, weather permitting

Arts and Crafts for Costume/Prop and “scenery”-making

Tie-dye day

Games

Movie day

1 snack provided per day (parents should send healthy lunches with children)

Outdoor play

Extended day includes: additional arts and crafts, movie & popcorn day, extra tie-dye afternoon

What should my child wear?

FIRST OFF, please do not send your child to our camp in clothes that you would be upset about staining. We do LOTS of arts and crafts including permanent markers, inks, paints, glue, paper mache, etc. Even though we provide aprons, they WILL get dirty!

Ballet tights and leotards can get very uncomfortable after a long day, so we actually do not recommend them unless your child is capable of changing him or herself when it becomes uncomfortable. If you dress them in these clothes, please ensure they have FOOTLESS tights (that can be rolled up for modern dance, which is performed barefoot), and that they have ballet shoes with leather bottoms (not soft bedroom slippers).

That being said, ballet shoes and clothes are NOT required.

We recommend children wear “gym” clothes. Short shorts or open-leg shorts are not recommended. Yoga pants are preferred. No jeans, skirts, or dresses, please.

PLEASE NOTE: The CCAC is not an air-conditioned building. Be aware the building may be hot and humid, in general. We ask that you keep this in mind when dressing your child. We will be providing drink cups with ice and water throughout the day.

What should I pack for my child?
  1. A labeled, nutritious lunch that does not require refrigeration
  2. Any authorized medicines separated and given to staff, labeled clearly with instructions (this includes epi pens)
  3. A labeled change of clothes if he or she may have accidents
  4. Children with long hair should have hair bands
  5. Water day: the children will need to bring a towel and swimsuit. We will announce the water day the week-of (due to changing weather forecasts)
  6. Additional needs will be sent via email; please monitor!

PLEASE NOTE: The CCAC is not an air-conditioned building.

When is drop-off and pick-up?
  • Please do not arrive any earlier than 8:30am or any later than 9:00am.
  • Camp is finished at 3pm. If you arrive after 3:10pm, you will be subject to to the $10 per child extended day charge.
  • Aftercare for pick-up between 3:10pm and 6:00pm is $10 per child per day. If you arrive after 6:00pm, you are subject to a $25 late fee.
  • All late pick-up fees are due at the time of pick-up.
  • Please inform staff on your enrollment form of all pick-up times.
